Parkinson Defeats Victorian Wildcard Robertson to Claim Rip Curl Pro

Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27, has claimed the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Snickers, defeating fellow Finalist Adam Robertson (AUS), 26, trials winner and event wildcard, in pumping six-foot (2 metre) conditions at Bells Beach.
The second stop on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach enjoyed pristine conditions for the business end of competition, with capacity crowds turning up to watch the current ASP World No. 1 battle the local Victorian in a historic Final.
Today’s victory marks the second time Parkinson has hoisted the bell (the first being in 2004), and the reputation and acclaim associated with the iconic event is something every surfer dreams of.
"Winning at home is probably the most special win you can have but this is the most special trophy you can have,” Parkinson said. “There is not another trophy in surfing that holds the prestige and honor list that this has. To be back on the trophy again and to hold it for a year is going to be amazing.”
Parkinson’s win today makes it two for two thus far on the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings, cementing the stylish natural-footer’s place atop the ratings in the hunt for the ASP World Title.
“I took confidence from home and now from here I’ll take more,” Parkinson said. “People can get caught up in the whole world title race, but I always said I wanted start the year with some results – I just never thought I would start this well. There are a lot of really hungry, angry surfers that are behind me and will come out so strong in the next events. I’m just showing up to the next event with my same game plan and taking things step by step. I’ve said since the Gold Coast that the World Title is a marathon, not a sprint. There are still eight events.”
While Robertson opened up strong, it was Parkinson’s forehand flair and precision that saw the Gold Coaster net an impressive 17.40 out of a possible 20 heat total for the win.
“Robbo (Adam Robertson) and I were having a great time out there,” Parkinson said. “We were talking about what it takes to win and having a wonderful Final. I have to really pay Robbo a huge compliment because of his effort out here. For a wildcard and coming through the trials, he surfed so many heats, (I think nine) and what’s he accomplished is just so admirable.”
Robertson’s effort at the 2009 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach will go down in history, as the young natural-footer’s runner-up finish is the highest ever by a Victorian at the prestigious competition.
“I guess I just got on a roll in the heat against Bede (Durbidge) and the waves were really good and they suited me,” Robertson said. “I just had to roll with it and I am really happy with the result.”
Throughout the course of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Robertson went toe-to-toe with the world’s best surfers, eliminating Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23, Tom Whitaker (AUS), 29, Bede Durbidge (AUS), 25, among others in the process. Despite not having a major sponsor, Robertson’s nine-heat effort proved to all that he’s capable of world-class surfing
“It’s great, I feel good, I feel fit and I feel like I am surfing well,” Robertson said. “I just have to take that into the WQS (World Qualifying Series) now so that I can qualify for the ASP World Tour. The prize-money will help, but a little bit extra is always good, a bit of sponsorship. But that’s okay, it is really hard right now for a lot of people to get a sponsor, not just myself. My goal is just to go good and win prize money and keep going. I will just keep that mentality until someone comes along and if sponsorship doesn’t come along then I’ve just got to keep going good.”
Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 27, secured an equal 3rd at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach (his best finish to date) with no-nonsense power surfing on his backhand before going down to Robertson in the Semifinals. Despite failing to see a Finals berth, Patacchia’s stellar start to 2009 has him sitting No. 3 on the ASP World Tour ratings.
"I am totally stoked with my start to the year,” Patacchia said. “Being a backsider out here is difficult, but I have been watching guys like Occ (Mark Occhilupo) and Tom Carroll all my life and it just takes time to figure it out. It is tricky. It is one of those waves you can surf your whole life and still have a shocker."
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21, former ASP World Junior Champion and ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) No. 1, is into his second season on the ASP World Tour and today’s finish matched his best result. The powerful natural-footer went on a tear through today’s proceedings, eliminating former ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, in the Quarterfinals before falling to eventual winner Parkinson in the Semifinals.
"This is the best result of my career so far,” Smith said. “I think it is equal with what I got at J-Bay as a wildcard. I can’t complain. I’ll maybe have a little fun tonight, a little party and celebrate with the winner. It has been pretty much good waves all week so I have been stoked to be down here. Congratulations to Joel (Parkinson), he made the Final and he surfed really well. I think this year is his year, he is certainly a world title contender."

Joël Parkinson a remporté le Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach présenté par Snickers en remportant sa finale face à Adam Robertson (AUS), 26 ans et détenteur d’une Wildcard dans des vagues propres de 2 mètres.
La deuxième étape de l’ASP World Tour s’est terminée dans des conditions parfaites. Le public venu en masse aujourd’hui à Bells Beach a profité d’un duel de haut niveau opposant le No.1 mondial au héro local dans une finale désormais historique.
“Nous (Adam Robertson et Joël Parkinson) avons passé une super finale” Dit Parkinson. “ On a beaucoup discuté de ce qui fait une grande finale, de ce qui coute d’arriver jusque là. Je dois féliciter Robbo pour le très bon parcours qu’il a réalisé. Il est très dur pour quelqu’un qui ce qualifie lors des trials d’arriver jusqu’à la finale. Robbo à tout donné pour arriver jusque là, je l’admire pour ca.”
Parkinson sonne ainsi la cloche pour la deuxième fois de sa carrière (première fois en 2004) et emporte avec lui l’attention et le prestige associés à cet évènement.
“ Gagner sur la Gold Coast, à la maison, a été vraiment intense mais gagner ici à Bells c’est aussi spéciale” a dit Parkinson.” Aucun évènement n’a l’aura que dégage de Bells. Gagner à nouveau cette année et avoir ce titre pendant toute une année va être grandiose”
Après deux victoires d’affilées cette année, Joël Parkinson est désormais le grand favori à le titre mondial.
« Il est possible de prendre en route la course au titre. J’ai toujours pensé qu’il fallait que je commence bien la saison pour avoir une chance d’arriver au bout. Je ne pensais pas pour autant commencer aussi bien. Il y a un bon nombre de surfeur sur le Tour montés à bloc pour me battre sur les prochaines compétitions. Il reste encore 8 étapes cette année, je prends donc les choses les une après les autres.
Robertson s’inscrit dans l’histoire du Rip Curl Pro 2009, sa qualification pour la finale restera dans la mémoire de tous les habitants de l’Etat du Victoria.
“J’ai eu pas mal de chance dans la série contre Bede (Dubridge) les vague étaient avec moi, j’avais juste à faire mon take off, tout se passait à merveille.
Robertson a dû se affronter quelques uns des meilleures surfeurs du moment pour accéder à la finale du Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Il a en effet éliminé Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), Tom Whitaker (AUS) et Bede Durbidge (AUS). Ce surfeur sans sponsor majeur prouve ainsi la qualité de son surf.
“C’est génial, je me sens bien, en forme et j’ai l’impression de bien surfer,” a dit Robertson. « Je n’ai plus qu’à faire la même chose sur les WQS (World Qualifying Series) et me qualifier pour l’ASP World Tour. Cette récompense va faire du bien, mais un peu plus ne ferait pas de mal… comme un sponsor par exemple. Mais ça va, c’est dur pour tout le monde en ce moment. Mon objectif est toujours de bien surfer, de gagner des compétitions et d’avancer. »
Frederick Patacchia (HAW), 27 ans, a réalisé son meilleur résultat en Australie en finissant troisième du Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. Malgré sa défaite en demi final contre Robertson, Patacchia commence très bien l’année puisqu’il est 3ième au classement ASP après deux compétitions.
“Je suis le premier surpris par ce début de saison, » a dit Patacchia. « Surfer de dos sur cette vague est très dur, mais j’ai beaucoup observé Occy (Mark Occhilupo) et Tom Caroll pour m’inspirer. C’est un de ces spots que vous pouvez surfer toute votre vie sans vraiment le maîtriser. »
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21 ans, ancien champion du monde junior, attaque sa deuxième saison sur l’ASP World Tour et vient de réaliser son meilleur résultat. Particulièrement en forme aujourd’hui, il a éliminé Mick Fanning (AUS), ancien champion du monde, avant de chuter face à Joël Parkinson en demi finale.

Parkinson Vence al Wildcard Local Robertson y se Consagra como Campeón del Rip Curl Pro.
Joel Parkinson (AUS), 27 se ha consagrado como campeón del Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, presentado por Snickers, al vencer a su compañero finalista, ganador de los trials y wildcard del evento Adam Robertson (AUS), 26, en excelentes condiciones (2 metros) en Bells Beach.
La segunda parada del Tour Mundial 2009 de la ASP, el Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach disfrutó de prístinas condiciones para la finalización del campeonato y permitió que una gran multitud pudiera presenciar como el actual líder del Ranking Mundial de la ASP vencía al local de Victoria en una histórica Final. Mientras que Robertson entraba con fuerza al principio del heat, fue el talentoso forehand de Parkinson el que logró una gran precisión permitiéndole obtener un impresionante puntaje de 17.40 sobre un total de 20.00 y lograr la victoria.
"Robbo (Adam Robertson) y yo estábamos pasándolo muy bien allá afuera", señaló Parkinson. "Estábamos conversando sobre lo que se necesita para ganar y tener una gran Final. Verdaderamente debo decirle a Robbo un gran cumplido debido a todo el esfuerzo que puso acá. Al ser un wildcard y haber pasado a través de los trials tuvo que surfear muchos heats, (creo que nueve) y lo que logró es realmente admirable."
La victoria del día de hoy marca la segunda vez que Parkinson obtiene la preciada campana (la primera vez fue el 2004), y la reputación y ovación asociada a este simbólico evento es algo con lo que todos los surfistas sueñan.
"Ganar en casa es probablemente la victoria más especial pero este es el trofeo más especial que uno puede obtener." reconoció Parkinson. "No hay ningún otro trofeo en el surf que tenga tanto prestigio y una lista de honor tan grande como este. Volver a ganar este trofeo y poder tenerlo durante un año va a ser algo increíble."
Para Parkinson, esta victoria es la segunda consecutiva en lo que va de la temporada del 2009 cimentando aún más las opciónes del estiloso natural footer de obtener un Título Mundial de la ASP.
"Gané mucha confianza desde de la victoria en casa y de ahora en adelante la seguiré aumentando", dijo Parkinson. "La gente se puede quedar estancada en la carrera por el titulo mundial, pero siempre dije que quería comenzar el año con buenos resultados --y nunca pensé que iba a comenzar tan bien. Hay un montón de buenos y enojados surfistas detrás de mi y se que vendrán mas fuertes para los próximos eventos. Yo solo estoy mostrando mi plan de juego para los próximos eventos y tratando de tomar las cosas paso a paso. Desde el evento en Gold Coast he dicho que el Título Mundial es una maratón y no una carrera corta. Aún quedan 8 eventos por delante."
El gran esfuerzo de Robertson durante el Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2009 pasará a la historia como el mejor resultado que ha obtenido un local de Victoria en toda la historia del prestigioso evento.
"Creo que después del heat contra Bede (Durbidge) agarré un buen ritmo y las olas fueron my buenas para mi", reconoció Robertson. "Solo tuve que mantener ese buen ritmo y estoy muy feliz con este resultado."
Durante el Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Robertson fue mano a mano con los mejores surfistas del mundo, eliminando a Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 23, Tom Whitaker (AUS), 29, Bede Durbidge (AUS), 25, y a otros más durante el proceso. A pesar de que no cuenta con un auspiciador principal, el esfuerzo mostrado durante los nueve heats, comprobó que Robertson tiene un surf de clase mundial.
"Es increíble, me siento bien, con fuerza y siento que estoy surfeando bien". señaló Robertson. "Solo tengo que llevar esto a la Serie de Clasificaciones Mundiales (WQS) y tratar de calificar al Tour Mundial de la ASP. El premio en dinero me ayudará pero siempre es bueno tener un poco de auspicio. Pero está bien, es muy difícil para mucha gente conseguir auspiciadores, no solo para mi. Mi meta es tratar de hacer lo mejor posible, ganar dinero en premios y seguir hacia adelante. Voy a seguir con esa mentalidad hasta que alguien venga y si es que ningún auspiciador se presenta deberé seguir tratando de hacerlo mejor aún."
Fredrick Pattachia (HAW), 27, aseguró un tercer lugar en empate en Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach (su mejor resultado en este evento) gracias a su espectacular surf de backhand antes de ser eliminado por Robertson en las Semifinales. A pesar de que no consiguió llegar a la Final, el increíble comienzo de la temporada 2009 dejará a Pattachia en el tercer lugar del Ranking Mundial de la ASP.
"Estoy completamente alucinado con mi comienzo de temporada este año" dijo Pattachia. "Ser backhander acá es muy difícil, pero he estado observando a tipos como Occ (Mark Occhilupo) y Tom Carrol durante toda mi vida y es solo cuestión de tiempo el poder acostumbrarse. Es una ola complicada. Es una de esas olas que puedes surfear durante toda tu vida y finalmente te puede sorprender."
Jordy Smith (ZAF), 21, Campeón Mundial Junior de la ASP y ex número uno de la Serie de Clasificaciones Mundiales (WQS) está en su segunda temporada en el Tour Mundial y el día de hoy obtuvo su mejor resultado. El poderoso natural-footer pasó por los mas difíciles obstáculos el día de hoy al vencer a Mick Fanning (AUS), 27, Campeón del Mundo el año 2007, en los Cuartos de Final, momentos antes de perder frente al ganador del evento Joel Parkinson en la Semifinal.
"Este es el mejor resultado de mi carrera, definitivamente," reconoció Smith. "Creo es que el mismo que obtuve en J-Bay cuando fui wildcard. No me puedo quejar. Creo que hoy en la noche vamos a pasarlo bien, tendremos alguna fiesta y celebraremos con el ganador. Las olas han estado muy buenas durante toda la semana, por lo tanto, estoy muy feliz de haber venido acá. Felicitaciones a Joel Parkinson, consiguió la Final y está surfeando realmente bien. Creo que este es su año y ciertamente es un contendor para el Título Mundial."
