About The Rip Curl Cup

Now in its seventh year, the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running surfing competition and the only ISC tour event featuring top international surfers alongside Indonesia’s best.

The inaugural event was held in 2004 and won by local surfer Made “Bol” Adi Putra, who defended his title in 2005. In 2007 international surfers were invited to compete as well.

World-class tube riders such as Koby Abberton (Australia), Nathan Fletcher (California) and Jon Jon Florence (Hawaii) all jumped at the opportunity to compete in the prestigious event and surf Padang with just one other surfer out. The following year, the Rip Curl Cup was held as the trials for the 2008 Rip Curl Search World Championship Tour event. Kuta’s I Komang “GoGo” Sujaya took the Cup and earned a spot in the main draw of the WCT event at Uluwatu.

This year Rip Curl will continue to infuse the contest with inter- national flavor and big names. The field of 32 surfers will be split equally between 16 of Indonesia’s all-time Padang surfers and 16 of the world’s best tube slayers. This invitational format, along with the allure of the wave at Padang and a 65 million rupiah prize purse, makes the Rip Curl Cup the most anticipated event of the Indo surf season.

The Cup...

The trophy was designed by local Balinese artists at MOD Jewelry, makers of past Association of Surfing Professionals championship rings and awards. It was entirely hand-carved from teak wood and inlayed with silver.

The bowl is carved into the shape of a flower and is mounted above wood made to look like a craggy chunk of Padang reef. Each year the cup is filled with Bintang and the winner must wash it all down on the victory podium.

In the tradition of all great sporting prizes, the winner’s name is permanently inscribed on the trophy. Each winner receives his own version of the trophy, but the original Cup remains at Rip Curl headquarters in Bali for all to behold.

Keeping Padang Padang Green

In the Balinese language, Padang Padang means "green grass." In an effort to preserve the natural beauty of this special place, Rip Curl has taken several steps to make this year's Padang Cup as "green" as possible. On contest day, recycling and trash bins will be placed throughout the premises to make it easy for everyone to dispose of their waste properly. Organic, chemical-free portable toilets will also be on site and available for the many spectators expected toilets will also be on site and available for the many spectators expected to attend. Following the awards ceremony, Rip Curl will host a beach cleanup at Padang Padang to ensure this annual event leaves the beach cleaner than before and the surrounding hills as green as the day they were named.

MAGIC SEAWEED SWELL FORECAST

Fri 20th Aug 1am

Friday Update
-----------------------------

Decent southerly swells and moderate winds have created good east coast conditions and there's more solid swell on the way for Tuesday/Wednesday next week. This is looking like one of the biggest swells of the waiting period so far so plenty for contestants still in Indo to get their teeth into, but with the very southerly direction again highly unlikely to create contestable conditions at Padang Padang for the Rip Curl Cup. With the end of the waiting period in clear view now it looks extremely unlikely that we'll see another swell of substance sufficient to get Padang firing. We'll sign off now unless there's significant change in the outlook - check out magicseaweed.com for the latest ten day outlook for the whole of indo 365 days a year.
