Made "Bol" Adi Putra (2004, 2005)Conditions for final: 2004 was held at Uluwatu. 2005 featured some of the best waves in the event's history, six-foot (Hawaiian) solid Padang, on fire. How did it feel to win the first two Padang Cups? "it was so sick, especially the second year because it was just best Padang. I got the bomb of the contest and it ended up in a double-page spread in Surfing Magazine. And then the whole contest was featured in the movie Shades of Bali, so my sponsor was so happy at that time. Padang is pretty much my favorite wave. I love it. Best left in Bali, you know?" |
Lee Wilson (2006)Condition for final: Held it pumping, textbook-perfect Bingin. Wilson and Lakey Peak local, Joey Barrel, traded standup barrels. "I was behind the whole time and needed high nine. I found it in the last couple minutes. I got a deep barrel, did a full reo and then did a floater on the end section onto the reef. It was pretty dry." What did winning the Cup mean to you? "To be honest, the day of the contest I was really over it. I was doing shit on the ISC that year. My frined had to get me out of bed and pour water on my face. He basically made me do it. But then I ended up winning a few heats and doing pretty good, and then I ended up winning. And some pretty good guys got knocked out that day, guys like Bol and Garut. I'm a natural footer, so it felt extra special to win because goofyfoots normally own that wave." |

Kane Faint (2007)Age: 35 Hometown: Lennox Head, Australia Conditions for final: Good waves fired for the early morning heats and hung around for the final, which saw 4-foot drainers at low tide. What did winning the Cup mean to you? "It was an absolute honor to compete at the iconic Rip Curl Padang Cup, and to take win was just a bonus." |
I Komang "Gogo" Sujaya (2008)Age: 26 Hometown: Kuta Conditions for final: Good 3 to 4 foot Uluwatu. Long rides and solid tubes. Gogo defeated Dede Suryana in the final. How did it feel to win the Cup? "So happy. It was the first time in my life I got to surf against the WCT guys. In Round One I surfed with Kelly (Slater) and Timmy Reyes. In the second round I surfed against Taj Burrow. I will never forget that." |

Friday Update
-----------------------------
Decent southerly swells and moderate winds have created good east coast conditions and there's more solid swell on the way for Tuesday/Wednesday next week. This is looking like one of the biggest swells of the waiting period so far so plenty for contestants still in Indo to get their teeth into, but with the very southerly direction again highly unlikely to create contestable conditions at Padang Padang for the Rip Curl Cup. With the end of the waiting period in clear view now it looks extremely unlikely that we'll see another swell of substance sufficient to get Padang firing. We'll sign off now unless there's significant change in the outlook - check out magicseaweed.com for the latest ten day outlook for the whole of indo 365 days a year.
