March 26, 2013 – Jack Perry emerged victorious in the Wingman Trials at Bells Beach on Tuesday. Perry bested Victoria’s highest rated Pro Junior surfer, Harry Mann, in the final, held in near-perfect two-foot waves at Rincon.
By winning the Wingman Trials, Perry, of Jan Juc, has earned himself a wildcard into the main event of the Rip Curl Pro presented by Ford at Bells Beach, and will now face defending ASP world champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Brett Simpson (USA) in his Round 1 heat.
Ex-world tour surfer Troy Brooks of Torquay and Cahill Bell-Warren from Bells Beach couldn’t post the scores they needed in their respective semi-finals, held in smaller and at times inconsistent waves.
Mann had the lead in the final, but Perry took it back with an 8.5 at the half-way mark, to combine with his 7.0 for a total of 15.4, to Mann’s 10.9 (5.5 and 5.4).
After coming runner-up in the Trials in previous years, Perry said he was ecstatic to get a long-awaited wildcard.
“I was not expecting this at all, it’s come as a massive surprise,” Perry said. “I’ve come second to my best mates numerous amounts of times, and been envious of them in the main event. Now I’ll be able to tick this off the bucket list.”
Perry could be in the water as early as Wednesday morning, the start of the Rip Curl Pro event waiting period, which runs from Wednesday, March 27 to Sunday, April 7.
“I’ll just relax and see if I can catch a wave,” said Perry. “I won’t be doing anything different.”
