We are gathered here today to join Tim Bisso on his Rip Curl Cup adventure. The underground 19-year-old from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe turned heads at Padang Padang last week with a gutsy barrel riding performance in his first-ever Rip Curl Cup.
Tim won his Rd. 1 heat over defending champion Garut Widiarta and two-time winner Bol Adi Putra. Then he bagged more tube time in Rd. 2 to earn a berth in the semifinals. Unfortunately, on his last wave of Rd. 2, a deep spitter that earned him an 8-point ride, Tim injured his left leg and was unable to continue his surprise Rip Curl Cup campaign. Tim explains:
“I was in the barrel when the foam ball exploded and flexed my back leg. Five minutes later I couldn’t move my leg because I was in so much pain. The doctors on the beach told me I strained my ligament and urged me not to go back out there on it. Of course I’m disappointed, but the show was amazing to watch. Watching Mason (Ho) and Clay (Marzo) and all the locals seeing how deep they could ride in the barrel out there was unbelievable. I was hoping to be out there with them, but now I have even more motivation for next time. I want to thank Rip Curl for the opportunity and I will be back next year for sure.”
Never one to stay down for long, Tim is already back surfing in Indo and currently on the Search with Mason Ho and Jacob Willcox to a remote island in Nusa Tenggara. As his latest edit from Bali proves, whether he’s shredding the WQS, weaving through treacherous reef break tunnels, or crooning at your Bali wedding ceremony, Tim Bisso is truly the best man.
