Bali, Indonesia Local Time:

Solid Swell On Tap For Trials & Opening Ceremony

Sixteen of Bali's best local surfers are preparing to surf pumping Padang Padang for the trials of the 2013 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational this week.

They will be competing for two local wildcard spots in the main event. The Rip Curl Cup trials will be held on Sunday, June 30th, either at Padang Padang or Uluwatu depending on swell conditions, and will be immediately followed by the event opening ceremony on the beach at Padang Padang at sunset.

Contest directors have identified a promising Padang swell tracking towards the island of Bali, scheduled to hit on Sunday, June 30th. According to official Rip Curl Cup surf forecaster Magic Seaweed:

“A modest but interesting storm looks set to push right up to Western Australia creating solid surf in Bali on Thursday, June 27th, with a second pulse from a larger system starting to show on Saturday, June 29th and running through the weekend. With both swells from the SSW and a predicted 10ft@17seconds combined seas on Thursday, these swells should offer great conditions for the trials.”

The 16 local surfers will be divided into four separate four-man opening round heats, each lasting 30 minutes, followed by the semi-finals and final. The winner of the trials, as well as the highest-placing Bukit local, will both receive entry into the main event and the chance to compete for $10,000 in prize money.

The 16 local trialists include 11 local surfers from Bali's famed Bukit Peninsula, home to the epic barrel-machine of Padang Padang, as well as five local surfers from the greater Bali area. Following is the full list of trialists:

It's the dream for all of them.”

The two winners from the local trials will join 30 of the world's best tube riders for the opening ceremony for the 2013 Rip Curl Cup on Sunday, June 30th. The opening ceremony will be held at Padang Padang beach and signals the start of the six-week event waiting period. Rip Curl has extended the contest waiting period to an unprecedented six weeks, beginning July 1st and running through August 15th, to ensure catching a contest-worthy swell.

Among the 16 international surfers confirmed to compete in 2013 are defending champion Chris Ward (USA), Mark Occhilupo (Australia), Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Ry Craike (Australia), Kekoa Bacalso (Hawaii) and Bruno Santos (Brazil). Indonesia will be represented by two-time Rip Curl Cup champions Made “Bol” Adi Putra and Lee Wilson, Rizal Tanjung, Marlon Gerber, Garut Widiarta, and Dede Suryana, among others. There will also be a strong contingent of some of the world's top grom surfers competing for Padang Cup glory, including ISA World Junior Surfing U-16 champion Jacob Willcox (Australia), Jack Robinson (Australia), and Luke Hynd.

The complete list of 32 invitees will be released just prior to the June 30th Opening Ceremony.
