Wilko's Guide to Peniche

Matt Wilkinson loves Peniche, so who better to talk us through his favourite parts of this great Portuguese surfing town.

1) Well the first place to check out is Supertubes. I mean that place is one of my favourite waves anywhere in the world. It is awesome whether it's 1 foot or 8 foot and delivers some of the best tubes on the planet, but also is great for airs as well.

2) While Peniche is a cool place to visit all year round, I think you have to go when the Rip Curl Pro is in town. The vibe on the beach is crazy, one of the best atmospheres of any stop on tour. It's awesome to have a beer down at the bars when the contest is on. It's pretty crazy all the time, but goes especially mad when local boy Tiago Pires has a heat on!

3) Lisboa is a short drive away and I always try and head down there on a weekend if I'm free. Head to the Bairro Alto district right in the heart of the city. The streets go crazy with people partying, everyone is super cool and it's a really fun day or night out.

4) While all the food is really good in Peniche, especially the seafood, my favourite place to eat is a restaurant called Restaurante Popular. It's named for a very good reason, they put all the fresh seafood on skewers and the food there is awesome.

5) I gotta say the Sardines. Peniche is famous for its sardines and wherever you go they always taste pretty good. So good in fact I had Rip Curl design me a sardine print for my wetsuit last year. The locals loved it and it was a massive hit. We'll see what we can come up with this year.
